Today Is The Perfect Reason To Buy A Central Virginia Horse Farm

December 29th, 2008

Horse in sunToday is December 29.  The middle of winter in most parts of the country.  In Charlottesville we were treated to sunshine and highs in the mid 50's.  This follows two days of highs in the 60's.  Perfect riding weather!  And the perfect reason to own a farm in Charlottesville and Central Virginia.

I am not saying that this is the norm for winter weather in Virginia, but we do get some of everything.  We can get several weeks at a time of cold wintery weather with snow and ice.  However, we will also often get a little break with weather in the 50's as well.  You can usually keep horses in work outside throughout the winter with only a few days missed due to weather conditions that make it impossible to ride.  When people first come to Virginia to shop for a farm, one of the first things that they remark on is the fact that very few of the farms have indoor arenas.  While an indoor is definately a plus it is by no means a necessity if you want to keep riding throughout the winter.

Visit Charlottesville, Virginia and Albemarle County to see some of the most beautiful horse farms on the east coast and enjoy the moderate climate with four distinct seasons… but don't tell that sometimes we get little glimpses of spring in the winter time.

Celebrate The New Year With First Night Virginia

December 27th, 2008

New YearsFirst Night Virginia is an annual community New Years Eve celebration in Charlottesville, Virginia.  This year's theme is "The Night of Possibilities" and marks the 27th year of the community oriented celebration.  First Night Virginia which is centered in Downtown Charlottesville provides an alcohol free, family centered evening of music, theatre, dance and activities for all ages.  The event starts at 2:30 and will continue until midnight encompasing almost 70 performances occuring in 20 locations throughout the downtown area .

There are activities that are particularly child centered such as arts and crafts activities, the balloon lady and music with Kid Pan Alley.  Teens will enjoy the Teen Band Showcase featuring performances by 8 area bands.  Adults will enjoy performances of Highlights from the Paramount Theater, as well as participating in the Dance-travaganza, a celebration of dance occuring all over the mall.

One of the main events that everyone can join in is the Community Processional which starts at 6:30 pm at the Omni Hotel and proceeds along the mall to the Pavillion.  Another First Night tradition is the fireworks which take place at 9:00 pm so that they are early enough to be viewed by the children.  There will also be a midnight celebration with a ball drop at the Landmark Hotel.

Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.firstnightvirginia.musictoday.com or at a variety of area merchants.  It is also possible to reserve seatin for particular performances.  First Night Virginia Headquarters located in the Omni Hotel Atrium will be open December 29-December 31.

Green Facts – The Case For Underground Power Lines

December 19th, 2008

PowerlinesI was surprised to read today in an article published in the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star titled Edison Did It Right: Put The Lines Out Of Sight that when Thomas Edison first started supplying electirc lights to New York City the lines to his customers were run underground.  It was only later as power expanded into the countryside that lines began to be run above ground.

As you know in many areas of Virginia you can see unsightly metal towers carrying power lines.  Land that is in proximity to these lines can have decreased value.  You may have heard reports of the controversy in the Norther Virginia and Pennsylvania area over the proposed high power lines to support the increased use od power due to internet usage in the Beltway area.  These unsightly lines will cross some of the most beautiful farmland in Virginia forever spoiling the natural beauty of the area.

Not only are below ground lines a good choice to preserve our rural beauty and also our rural land values, but also the additional cost of burying the lines can be weighed against the reduced maintenance and protection from storm damage of the underground lines.

Underground lines are the best choice for our Virginia countryside.  Lets all work on Keeping Virginia green!

Charlottesville, Virginia and Albemarle County have many choices of green-built and Energy Star homes and I would be glad to help you find the one to suit your needs.
